This app type makes it easy for you to assign Microsoft Edge to macOS devices without requiring you to use the macOS app wrapping tool. To help keep the apps more secure and up to date, the app comes with Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU).

If you install software from an unofficial source, scan that downloaded package with your antivirus software of choice. We have to remind you to be wary of installing things that show up in random people's Twitter feeds.

For now, if you want to move to the new Edge browser, you'll need to download it. Over the coming months, Microsoft will push out the new browser to customers, starting in the next few weeks with those who are part of the Windows Insiders program. If you decide to start from scratch, you can import your browser data later.

Launching and using the Microsoft Edge browser on the Mac is the same as any other Mac app, as it installs into your /Applications folder. From some brief preliminary testing, despite being a developer beta build it seems to work fine and be stable enough for regular use.

The Canary build will receive updates daily, while the Dev build will receive updates weekly. You can install and try out either or both (or neither) on a Mac. If you just want to play around with the browser and explore, the Dev build is probably better suited for that purpose.

In May 2020, an update to Microsoft Edge added Surf, a video game where players control a surfer attempting to evade obstacles and collect powerups. Similar to Google Chrome's Dinosaur Game, Surf is accessible from the browser's offline error page and can also be accessed by entering edge://surf into the address bar. The game features three game modes (classic, time trial, and slalom), has character customization, and supports keyboard, mouse, touch, and gamepad controls.[45][46] Its gameplay has been compared to the 1991 Microsoft video game SkiFree.[47][48]

According to Douglas J. Leith, a computer science professor from Trinity College, Dublin, Microsoft Edge is among the least private browsers. He explained, "from a privacy perspective Microsoft Edge and Yandex are much more worrisome than the other browsers studied. Both send identifiers that are linked to the device hardware and so persist across fresh browser installs and can also be used to link different apps running on the same device. Edge sends the hardware UUID of the device to Microsoft, a strong and enduring identifier than cannot be easily changed or deleted."[143] In response, a spokesperson from Microsoft Edge explained that it uses user diagnostic data to improve the product.[144]

In June 2020, users criticized newly released Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 updates that installed Edge and imported some user data from Chrome and Firefox prior to obtaining user permission. Microsoft responded by stating that if a user rejects giving Edge data import permission, then Edge will delete the imported data. However, if the browser crashes before the user has a chance to reject the import, then the already imported data will not be cleared.[145][146] The Verge called these "spyware tactics" and called Edge's "first run experience" a "dark pattern".[147]

We use this to keep most of the browsers our users install up to date... download the PKG from the vendor (in this case Microsoft), upload it to Jamf, define it in Patch Management and scope to All Managed Clients (which will only target devices with Edge installed). Set it and forget it.

ThanksI almost got excited there when you gave me hope that App Catalog might actually work. I want to specifically avoid needing to try and manage specific versions of apps. If a critical security update is released, I just want it on every machine with a short space of time.Unfortunately my experience so far of trying to get App Catalog to works is 0 for 2. I've tried to get it to install Zoom and Firefox and it has gone nowhere. To be fair - this is roughly the experience I am coming to expect from Apple and Jamf when trying to automate things at enterprise scale. It seems like numerous other users are having similar issues: -pro/jamf-app-catalog-mac-apps-not-installing/td-p/268719
